Camping off-site, really looking for advice

I'm posting here because neither Google nor the Fair website are very helpful on figuring this out, especially since I don't trust things like, "NO Drugs, NO alcohol." Really? What planet are you camping on? Not that I want to be drugged out, but I know that's not what happens on these sites. And no open fires, including candles? Not my experience.

The last two years I've camped at Shady Rest, which was nice but I'm curious about other sites. My friends and I want someplace within walking distance, with shade, and quiets down (like, people stop walking through your camp after midnight), but still an active vibe after dark. Less RVs and few small children a plus.

I know that Zumwalt's out (especially since the lake is closed, I hear), and Darling sounds pretty big and crazy. Any advice about other campgrounds? Or, anyone want to sell me on Darling?

  • Well, tix are all sold out for Darling's -- heard they were gone by June 19. Never happened before to my knowledge. Yikes! After camping there with friends every year for more than a decade, I have to camp somewhere else. Looks like it'll be Zumwalt this year. Beautiful place, but as a drummer I don't like having to be quiet after 10pm. Oh well....
    • Goodness, I'm glad I got my tickets when I did. Though this could mean there will be far more people sneaking into Darling than usual. I know this last year it seemed like they were bringing in more security, but that doesn't mean that people won't find a new place to come in through.
