I won't get into the details of why the band won't be at the fair this year, but I will say that if you've been counting on seeing us there, you better make other plans and get your butt to Portland. Our last public show in town before the fair is June 6th... don't miss it. Our LA guests Mutaytor will be bringing as much madness as the midnight show, and you know you can count on M4 to get your booty going!
*THIS IS AN ALL AGES EVENT

What do you get when you combine 100 tribal drums, live-mixed electronica, fire performers, hoop dancers, aerial artists, John Avila (Oingo Boingo) on bass, Steve Reid (Rippingtons/Supertramp) on percussion, a live horn section, Chinese parade lions, giant screen visuals and a bevy of interactive dancers and performers? The Mutaytor is part hip-grinding techno-retro-funk, part audience-interactive post-modern circus. The act takes drastically advanced elements of the Grateful Dead, Parliament-Funkadelic, the Crystal Method, Louis Prima and Blue Man Group and throws them directly at the audience as riotous surreal entertainment notable for "turning Civilians into Rockstars." The sound is tight, the show manic, the vibe all-inclusively friendly. They are on stage, above the audience, IN the crowd.

Re: March Fourth Marching Band won't be at the Fair this year...
Sun, May 11, 2008 - 2:59 PMOh...sad.
But hey....M4 has played at the fair a couple of years in a row, with a main stage spot, a meadow show, and an appearance in the Midnight show. It takes something like twenty-four passes above and beyond the members of the band that all ready have jobs / passes to bring M4 to the fair.
The fair loves you guys and your friends. You'll be invited back. Don't worry.
See you in june! (ummmm...MUTAYTOR & M4...so yummmmmy). -

Re: Not guilty
Tue, July 1, 2008 - 4:57 PMWell either way this is a huge loss and I am sorry to not see it turn around. I look forward to seeing them perform all year. Regardless of situations, I will miss their performance as will many. Good luck on whatever travels you all have. -

Re: Not guilty
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 11:55 AMDucky, just to get the facts straight, we did apply to the main stage, and were not invited to play. We did not apply anywhere else. We have loved every Monkey Palace show we've done over the years, but the reality is that the stage is too small, we always blow the sound system, and the audience cannot see us. We decided to not settle for less from a performance perspective, and want to play main stage when we return to the fair. We are a big act with a big following.... we belong on main stage. -
-
Re: Not guilty
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 5:57 PMm4 definitely belongs on the main stage--no brainer! it would have been the highlight for so many fair-goers this year. i hope things work out next time.

Re: Not guilty
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 12:31 AMI definitely missed seeing M4 perform at the fair this year, but it was nice to see a few of you around & about the place anyway. The first time I ever saw you perform was at main stage two years ago, so I know a main stage gig is possible. Fingers are crossed that we'll see you there next year. M4, main stage, OCF '09! May the main stage deciders smile upon you once again!
(Btw, I understand the limitations of the Monkey Palace, but Chela Mela is such a great place for all the colorful freaky people to get their freak on -- couldn't you play there, too?) -

Re: Not guilty
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 10:14 AMI love M4!!!! Just like most musical performers I do not need to see them at the fair every year. I guess I get to see them more than many fair patrons.
At the fair My favorite place to see M4 is deffinitly the meadow. Perhaps they need a better sound system but from an audience perspective the meadow and M4 is where it is at. I find it much easier to see than main stage and the vibe is 100% better. I only go to main stage for acts that I can not see elswhere during the year. It is to crowded, and not nearly as kid friendly as the meadow. If you need to perform at main stage for your ego remember that when you perform in the meadow it is busier than any other time during public hours and it creates the most magic. People who like you know where to go. Please apply for both Monkey Palace and Main Stage in the future. -

m4 at fair
Sun, July 20, 2008 - 2:25 PMHey Jay,
From a musician's point of view, it's quite fun jamming in the meadow. Having people bumping and writhing all around while playing is really a blissful feeling. It also connects us to the audience and the energy goes back and "fourth" in a much tighter way. However, our performance has developed quite a bit over the last few years. Our dancers have worked out some amazing routines, and spend many hours on their craft. When we play in the meadow, they're usually on the outside of the tent, far removed from the band. The ideal situation would be for us to have a Main Stage show where we can showcase our fantastic stiltwalkers and dancers, and also have a meadow show to groove tightly with everyone. I guess it often comes down to what kind of an audience experience some one wants. Some people want to close their eyes, feel the music, and shake to the groove. Others want a more passive experience, watching the show and all of the 30some various different players doing their thing.
Personally I had a blast at the fair this year, and got to catch a lot of shows that I may have missed if we we're playing.
We look forward to playing the fair again in the future. And let's be clear.....it is always an honor to get to play at fair.
