Re: ive been looking....
Sun, March 30, 2008 - 3:12 PMI've gotten a couple pair from Country Spirit Crafts who are on Strawberry Lane and also at www.countryspirits.com
The first pair that I got from them was reason for a road trip down from Seattle to Southern Oregon for a fitting. My girlfriend and I stayed overnight at Arts place there in a yurt they had recently moved out of and were offering for sale. My second pair came about 8 years later, about the time my daughter was born in that yurt I had bought off of Art. 20 years after that first meeting I'm in need of a third pair and I wonder what magic it will bring me...... -

Re: ive been looking....
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 1:08 PMThat's a good point except one thing. If an animal hasn't worn it first to make sure it is safe, are you sure you want to wear it yourself?
I trust leather. It works well for animals, it works well for us too! -

Mon, April 21, 2008 - 9:27 PMThat is just sad Morgan. Would you want someone killing you and wearing your skin? -

Re: ive been looking....
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 11:35 PMI have a full back tattoo after the money I paid to have it put there I most strongly dowant someone to get some enjoyment out of it when I die "cut the damn thing off my back and make a jacket out of it". It is not the wearing dead flesh that bothers me after all it in not like they need it anymore and all told I am cool with someone wearing my flesh when I die "I am an organ donor". The only thing that gets people is that the animal is killed untimely to get its flesh.

good point, clinton. there should be more tanneries where they just wait for the animals to die. it would take a while to see a profit, but once things got going, there'd always be enough. really, it would just be a matter of waiting out that first generation.
slightly less patient leather companies could at least start working with road kill.

Re: ive been looking....
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 2:32 AMAnd as long as we continue to think we "have" to do it it will continue. I have no doubt the same thing was said about slavery, or owning women as property. Oppression is oppression, no matter who you're oppressing.
I would like to think that there is a place beyond the oppression of sentient beings, and that we, as a species, can arrive at that place together. -

Re: ive been looking....
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 5:38 AMi'm a lifelong veg since early childhood -- the only one in my family. believe me, i get it. and perhaps we do have the moral high ground. unfortunately, being shrill and strident just makes people think we're retarded. -

Re: ive been looking....
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 1:17 PMquite succinct, my props to yall for yer decisive analysis.
perhaps not yet mentioned is the fact that so many people are currently consuming meat as food that to neglect using the byproduct skin is to further disrespect the life of the animal that was raised and killed to be eaten.
and on that, perhaps we should be taking into account that it is unlikely that dead things suffer. That it is perhaps more important how the animal lives it's life that should determine the moral value of the exchange.
As everyone gets more hungry I suspect all of the life that is grown for skin will be eaten as well.
"unfortunately, being shrill and strident just makes people think we're retarded."
This may be the undoing of some of the greatest thinkers of our generation. As a friend of mine recently said in a speech, those who can be convinced by logic have been convinced, we must now seek to convince those who are more motivated by 'cool', 'hip', and lifestyle.
tragic but true.
rock on yos!

i think check the earthlings video (widely available free online) on this or other research on leather -- it seems like leather is very often not the leftover skin of animals otherwise consumed for food. counterintuitive, but seems to be true.

Re: ON TOPIC
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 3:03 PMi agree. we've gone so far OT it ain't funny. i did have a blast last night googling "handmade shoes." wow, it opened a whole world to me. and i would still like the link to a place that has great handmade shoes. most of the vegan ones i saw pretty much blew. but wow, if i had $500 to lay down for shoes now and hadn't decided last year to lay off the leather, man i'd be sporting some amazing boots. <salivating, thinking about shoes> -

Re: ON TOPIC
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 1:29 PMYes, off topic but it gets to the off off topic point that shoes that arent made of natural products are made of .....you guessed it...Plastic and rubber and petroleum. Sure you can find some of these recycled materials, which are great...but if we create a huge business in recycled shoes, those perpetuating chemiclas are still going to be produced so we can recycle them so that we can have our recycled shoes. Id much rather have natural leather than synthetic leather. The less chemiclas I live with the better, and thats not necessarily applied only to vegan outposts. -
