Lagged on putting up a post about The Silent Rave, and here it is Monday before fair all ready.
Damn how time flys.
Just wanted to let everyone know it is happening again of course, and I'm currently accepting volunteers to help with the handing out/taking in/tuning headphones during the party. Hit me up with PM or stop by the booth and ask for Forrest if you want to sign up to help out.
The OCF Silent Rave goes on after hours(usually starts @ 10pm) and is located at the Carravan Cafe next to the Gypsy stage.
Don't miss it!

Re: The Silent Rave
Mon, July 7, 2008 - 8:04 PMThe Silent Rave was a highlite for me last year. What a bunch of crazy thoughts going in and out of my head. I didn't get it until I tried it and I must say it was great. Looking forward to it this year.

Re: The Silent Rave
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 12:31 PMSorry I didn't have time to reply to these posts before the fair. The party went great as always, and it makes all the hard work worthwhile to hear so often that it's the highlight of peoples fair.
There is no "in" crowd thing going with this at all. Everyone is welcome to attend, and I'm sorry if that impression was ever given. The previous posts I made about the Silent Rave always had the location and times.
The party is always at my booth the "The Carravan Cafe". It's booth #41 and is located right next to the Gypsy Stage. We serve the Buffalo Burgers during the day, and do the party every night starting at around 11:00.
I bring headphones that I pass out to everyone. I have enough that you usually can always get one, and if they are all in use then you will most likely only wait a few minutes for someone to turn one in. I have people there that tune the headsets and make sure they are working right before handing them back out. I can always use more help doing this, and anyone interested in helping in the future is welcome to PM me.

BE SILENT NO MORE!!!
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 9:59 AMYes I've been going to your silent rave for years now and it was interesting for like the first year, but now I feel it has become a tragic symbol of how the OCF has no patience for its own kids! Does anybody remember the time that we had a real rave at the fair? It was inside of a dome in the meadow and it was awesome until everyone's grandparents showed up and freaked out over how loud it was! We were made to feel ashamed of our loud all night techno, and now we are "silenced." Isn't there something we can do about this? Maybe we should remap the fair with loud and quiet zones. There could be decibel police or something. Let's get something going forrest? -

Re: BE SILENT NO MORE!!!
Sun, August 24, 2008 - 4:17 PMNoise is an issue for property outside the fair for the most part.
As much as everyone would like to say(I was once one of them) that the hippy grandparents are complaining about the noise that is not the case really.
Sure there are some older folks in the fair, who want to complain about the noise, but coming from the perspective of working with the staff that manages the noise after hours, I can say it's more complicated then that. The complaints they get from within the fair itself are of minor concern in comparison with the complaints from outside.
The problem is the fair itself is surrounded by property owned by other people. The Fair may seem huge, but when you have amplified sound out there it reaches these people easily. They complain not to the Fair, but to the Man. Now if they Man gets too many noise complaints after hours in relation to the fair. Yeah you guessed it, they pull the permits, and the party is way over. Not just oh waaa they turned of my music over, but 25+ year event dead, done, fully over for everyone. I'm not trying to be the one arguing for afterhours bumpin that results in that.
Now the relatively quiet(in comparison with a sound system bumping house/techno) jam band shows that happen at night manage to get noise complaints from outside all the time. What do you think will happen to our sound system that pushes bass frequencies so low they still shake windows so far away that you can't even hear the actual sound, but your window still vibrates. Cue police siren.
The bottom line is that if you want to go hear electronic music blasting through a sound system all night long, then we regularly throw events like that all year long. I have no problem with having to resort to a compromise in order to get a dance party going at the fair. -

Re: BE SILENT NO MORE!!!
Sat, August 30, 2008 - 12:46 PMAmen! to recognizing the rather complex set of circumstances
surrounding the Fair and what's required to keep that little
world alive and well within the context of
the larger 'real' world surrounding it...
Nobody caught the disco dance party on Thursday?
Silent rave is a novel and curious affair at the Fair,
bone shattering dance music available year round
at many venues, drop up to Portland,
and keep pumping the Silence! (of the Silent Rave, that is!!!)

Re: BE SILENT NO MORE!!!
Thu, September 18, 2008 - 12:38 PMI don't know, the main stage midnight show is pretty damn loud and runs late (or use to, I don't bother). I think the fair needs to really needs to adapt and allow for alternative forms of music. I'm sure you've heard this statistic before but turntables out sell guitars 2 to 1 (Maybe that's because you need to buy two decks!;)
I love the silent rave but we should be allowed to have amplified music via DJs in a couple of locations inside the fair afterhours. (Say maybe out towards the dead lot or past the far-side, or even the meadow up until when the midnight show is over)
The silent rave is a great "work around" and a great option until fair policy gets changed, but there is just something about hearing music out loud, on a good sound system that just crushes hearing it via radio waves/head phones. How it draws you in from a distance, and you don't have to wait in line and tune it in to find out the DJ is just not your cup of tea.
Fair policy will not change unless people are highly active in the process (and even then . . . -This is a touchy issue)
Anyway thanks for all your hard work, I appreciate it.

Interesting story this week on NPR: Silent Ravers Dance 'Together, But Individually'
Different from what we do at the fair but still interesting.

Re: BE SILENT NO MORE!!!
Sun, January 11, 2009 - 11:53 PMthink the silent rave is going to be more important in the future and maybe needs expansion into other parts of the faire.
The BOD is very close to banning all amplified music after midnight with the exception of the Midnight Show. If you are concerned about this write the BOD care of the faire office or show up at the February BOD meeting to express your feelings. Read the January Faire Family News BOD minutes for more information on the discussion. It will be a guideline change.
I was the only member to vote against it at the January meeting. I did not feel there has been adequate discussion among the Faire family. We did not hear at all from the younger generation at all. Please speak up if you are concerned. -

Re: BE SILENT NO MORE!!!
Mon, January 12, 2009 - 1:13 AM
is this due to the midnight show/discocart faceoff last year? -
-
Re: BE SILENT NO MORE!!!
Wed, January 14, 2009 - 6:26 PMI didn't know about the Disco Cart/Midnight Show faceoff at all. However the Disco Cart has contributed to the late night sound concerns. I think it is more about the everynight crew parties (which I enjoy), especially the Refer (refridgeration) Crew party last year which went till 4AM on Sunday. The complaints really came from workers trying to sleep.
Also from the Fair's neighbors. Unfortunately Lane County has a late night sound ordinance that the neighbors have complained about the Fair violating.

Re: BE SILENT NO MORE!!!
Mon, January 12, 2009 - 4:04 PMIs this something that will/can actually be enforced? If it isn't enforced 100% it's not worth doing. It wil cause more discord. Shutting down crew parties should be fun for those whose shoulders that falls on. -
-
Re: BE SILENT NO MORE!!!
Wed, January 14, 2009 - 7:07 PMIt will be in the Guidelines, which we vote on at the February BOD meeting. Personally I prefer neighborhood agreements.
The process will be that those enities that are doing amplified sound will need to get a permit from the management team specifying beginning, ending times and loudness levels. Look at the minutes in the January Fair Family News which should be out in a week or so. There are several proposed guideline changes. It will be enforced as there is great support from the BUMs and management.
Crew parties will go on but they will be required to follow the terms of the permit. We already have Fire permits. Now we are going to get motorized vehicle permits (including motorized sofas) and party permits. We are a small city and growing in regulation. :(
Personally I have been advocating for a place on our land where we can have amplified music...like Pirates cove, where we can direct the sound so that it causes minimal impact on the neighbors and our campers. but I seem to be in the minority after the last election.
Generally I find the faire family cooperative if you explain what is going on to them. We like to work together. We shall see if this works. This is our 40th (actually 42nd fair) and we will party. I just expect they will end earlier. -

Re: BE SILENT NO MORE!!!
Wed, June 3, 2009 - 11:55 AMhey everyone check this out.... looks like paxton pulled some strings!
quoted straight from the 2009 guidelines
"sound amplification. Because
we camp so close together,
amplified sound, whether live
or recorded, projected beyond the
intended audience creates problems for
other Fair members. Think before you
crank it up; please be sensitive to the
surrounding impacts on live acoustic
musicians, exhausted kids and parents
trying to sleep, and Fair volunteers
with early morning shifts. Camp hosts,
coordinators, booth reps and campers
are encouraged to develop and negotiate
neighborhood agreements before the Fair
regarding sound levels and noise curfews.
If neighborhood agreements
have failed and conflicts
develop, the Management Team
will intervene if requested. Conflict
resolution decisions made by the Management
Team at that time must be honored
by all parties involved, and will be reviewed
post-Fair. All sound amplification, live
or recorded, must end at midnight on
Thursday and Sunday nights and 2am
on Friday and Saturday nights, with the
exception of Main Stage on Saturday
night. The Fair will be implementing
a Board-mandated sound amplification
permit system for the 2009 Fair. If you
are planning an event involving amplified
sound at any time of year on the Fair site,
you must obtain a permit from the Site
Manager or the Operations Manager for
your event."
and forrest im sending you a pm regarding some visual art :)

Re: BE SILENT NO MORE!!!
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 2:23 AMWondering about the permit process: The last board meeting minutes said this would be up on the website but I couldn't find it?
I put a call into the OCF office but was hoping that someone here might have some info about how to go about requesting a permit for this year.
Thanks

Permit for sound amplification
Mon, July 6, 2009 - 1:30 PMJust saw the application for the sound permit. It's cool they are allowing this, wondering how they'll decide to grant or deny the permits.
Paranoia creeps in, just medical MJ they'll have all us miscreants (and our party locations!) on a cental list
they'll know where to go for the best parties
;)
Can't wait for this year's fair!! -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Permit for sound amplification
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 12:28 PMI was walking by and thought everyone was just trippin' and dancing to nothing till I noticed everyone had headphones on.
Was a funny sight for my group..

Re: BE SILENT NO MORE!!!
Sun, July 26, 2009 - 5:14 PMIt was actually enforced, and without any sort of mediation nor ombudsmanship at all. It sure would have been great to at least have a conversation with Doug Green, who is well versed in the entire scene and interactions of so many diverse interests and parties. What transpired for us was essentially music criticism by a member of the Board who protested one night but danced the night away the next; same volume, same sound system, same intentionality only different musical tastes and camp attendees. If we do not accept the investment that the younger folks are making to help move the Faire into the 21st century, and acknowledging their time and energy with some degree of tribute to the music of these generations, then the future is much bleaker indeed. The enforcement of the new policy stinks, is arbitrarily applied to some groups and not others, is met with revolutionary intent, and needs to actually be what it was intended to be.
